King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

Jasmine, Grade 9

After the defeat of the Darkling, all is not well for Ravca. It seems like, for the new Ravcan king, there are enemies closing in on all fronts. King Nikolai, a newly crowned monarch with questionable heritage, is under pressure trying to save Ravca from those who would rather see it fall. Hiding a secret that's only getting worse, Nikolai fights off the curse left by the Darkling.. At his right hand side is Zoya, the Stormwitch. Feared by enemies and allies alike, Zoya fights for the future of Ravca; doing everything in her power to save it from enemies, new and old. Nina, having returned to Ravca after her adventure in Kerch, finds herself back in Fjerda on an undercover mission. Fighting against the country that Matthias loved, Nina can’t find it in herself to move on. But when Nina meets Hanne, a girl who defies Fjerdan tradition, her life is changed forever. Three friends fight to save Ravca and heal themselves.

The third series in the Grishaverse, King of Scars is a great addition to this already fantastic world. This novel continues the world we know in love in a new and exciting way. The author revisited beloved characters and gave them brand new depth. There is a healthy mix of returning characters and new ones to continue expanding the world. The plot is engaging and fast paced. You can never guess what is going to happen next. Leigh Bardugo perfectly balances three different story arcs and perspectives, as we have come to expect in her writing. I would love to recommend this novel to anyone. Great for a fantasy reader. I give this book a 4.5/5
