Hello, I am Matthew, Grade 12, and this is a review of the 5/5, 2022 movie, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story biographical musical parody film directed by Eric Appel (as his feature directorial debut), along with writing the screenplay with Alfred Matthew Yankovic, or as he’s more commonly known, Weird Al Yankovic, and the subject of the film. The film is one big satire of biopics (biography-based films), loosely based on Weird Al’s life and career as an accordionist and a parody song writer, and filled with so much stuff that ranges from slight changes in actual known facts to completely made out and even outlandish events that can absolutely play with the truth in a way that still remains tethered to it, that are witty and entertaining enough to stay fresh the entire time and leave you entertained with or without being a Weird Al fan big enough to know his actual life story, or even someone who has even seen a biopic. With the casting choice, while they all do well, I’d say Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al throughout nearly the entire affair is nothing short of fantastic, just locked in to a point where you just forget that guy on screen isn’t actually Weird Al, eventually. I’d recommend this movie to anyone who wants to have a laugh above the age of 13 considering the depictions of hallucinogens and a very softcore makeout scene, regardless of if you even know enough about Weird Al to get what’s altered or made up, or have even seen a biopic before, it’s great.
