This movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Barbie lives in Barbie land where all the Barbies have great lives, personal achievements and powerful positions in society….and all the Ken’s are  well “just Kens”.

The story is about Barbie starting to develop feelings and question her own existence.

She visits Weird Barbie played by Kate McKinnon, who suggests that maybe the little girl playing with her in the real world is unhappy. To help herself Barbie must travel to the real world to find and help her. Ken goes along too, and the real world is an eye opener to them both.

They both quickly discover that in Los Angeles lives and gender roles are not as simple as in Barbie land.  Barbie meets the all male staff at Mattel along with their CEO played by Will Ferrell.  She finds a friend in CEO assistant Gloria played by America Ferrera. Ken discovers his masculinity and goes back to Barbie Land to lead all the other Ken’s into a patriarchal takeover.

When she returns to Barbie Land Barbie is dismayed with all the changes, she has lost her house to Ken and all the other Barbies are now acting as submissive girlfriends.

The rest of the movie is about the Barbies outwitting the Ken’s and restoring Barbie Land to normal,  but can Barbie ever really return to her former self after experiencing the real world?

I rated this movie 2 stars because it was not a movie I personally enjoyed. I watched it with my family to be objective and provide this teen review. I gave the movie two out of five stars for the acting and set design. I feel like the storyline could have been stronger for such a hyped up movie.

I’d rate this movie 2 Stars
