Upgraded, a movie that came out recently, directed by Carlson Young (R-rated) totally saved rom coms for me. It’s been way too long since I watched a cute little rom com and watching this movie reminded me what a good movie usually feels like. However I must admit that this movie had many unrealistic moments along with some pretty predictable scenes BUT name one rom com that isn’t unrealistic and predictable… Long story short, I loved how Camila Mendes ABSOLUTELY shines throughout the movie and since she’s been in RIverdale for so long, seeing her in a better written character who was more relatable felt refreshing. Camila and Archie aka Ana and Will’s chemistry was so much better than what I thought it would be and pairing these two up for this movie was such a great choice. Unfortunately, I was not satisfied with the amount of screentime this couple got and for some reason the romance they had felt like a side story when in the trailer, it is very evident that this is THEIR story together but I still liked that this was a story of a young woman who believed in herself, even in doubt and hopelessness tried her best to become what she always wanted to be. Another plus of this movie is the characters Catherine, Claire and Julian. Before watching the movie, I thought that Claire’s character was going to be this annoying boss but in reality she wasn’t annoying at all, well not for me at least. She reminded me so much of Kirsten Stevens from the movie “Set It Up” (rich, entitled boss who grew to have a soft side for their assistant that everyone fears). I definitely wanted to see more of these characters bonding and seeing Claire watch Ana live up to the potential she saw in her. Lastly, Catherine and julian. Now this duo is my favourite. It was such a cute friendship and I like how they were kind of married without being married and they kind of adopted Ana. Ana and Catherine’s relationship was so much better than what we usually get in movies (rich boy’s mom hates his new girlfriend…boooorinnnggg). Overall this movie was deserved a ? from me!
