The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

Directed By: Kevin Reynolds

Rating: 2/5

The Count of Monte Cristo from 2002 is the most recent movie based on the original Novel from 1844. The movie is based on Edmond Dantes, and the struggle from being the son of a clerk, all the way to becoming the eventual Count of Monte Cristo. Edmond was an uneducated man, but a loyal one. Specifically to his fiancee, Mercedes, and his employer. The film focuses on revenge, after Edmonds former best friend Fernand frames him and gets him sent to prison. He would be set to die there. In the prison, Edmond met a priest. The priest educated him on many things such as economics, philosophy, and even math. Edmond and the priest would need to go by trial and error to break out of prison, or else they would rot in those walls for the rest of their lives. While there, Edmond has only one thing on his mind, revenge. For revenge would be the only way he could live with himself after his life being ruined by his former best friend. The film follows Edmonds strategic planning, and actions in order to achieve his revenge.

I found this movie very interesting. The movie was fairly long, however, the length was practically a requirement in order to keep it as similar as possible to the original novel. Although, I think that this film could have improved much more if  they made some scenes not as dull.

I would recommend this movie for anyone who takes joy in history, or looking at things philosophically. For me, I somewhat enjoyed this movie but considering I don’t enjoy history nor philosophy, I don’t think the movie could have done much more to captivate my interest.
