The Librarian of Crooked Lane is the first book in the Glass Library series by C.J. Archer, an author of historical fantasy and mystery novels. It is a captivating story of magic mystery set in 19th-century London. The main characters are Sylvia Ashe, a librarian who discovers that she might descend from magicians, and Gabe, a war hero who works as a consultant for Scotland Yard. Their paths cross when Gabe investigates the theft of a magic painting that Sylvia had seen in her library. Together, they embark on a quest to find the truth about Sylvia’s past while facing danger from powerful enemies who want to keep them in the dark. The plot is fast-paced and engaging. The author creates a vivid and immersive world of magic and books, where magicians can create paintings that come to life, books that can transport the reader to other places, and libraries that hide secrets and mysteries. The author also incorporates historical details and references, adding realism and depth to the story. The characters are well-developed and likable, with distinct personalities and backgrounds. Sylvia is a curious heroine who loves books and learning. She is brave and loyal, willing to risk her life for the truth. Gabe is a charming and handsome hero with a hidden vulnerability and guilt from his war experience. He is also protective and caring, especially towards Sylvia. The chemistry is palpable and sweet, with witty banter and tender moments.
I loved this book, the characters, and the setting. Readers that enjoy historical fiction would like this book.
