The Selection Kiera Kass

Lyza Grade 12

Rating:3/5

The Selection is set in a fictional setting called Illea run by monarchy and the society is organized into ranks. The protagonist is chosen to join 34 other girls to participate in the Selection, a competition to be picked by Prince Maxon Schreave and become the princess of Illéa. The book contains a love triangle, as well as tension between the competitors. The plot of the book felt a little forced, many different plot twists were explored, but none of them seemed to spark my interest as a reader or make me eager to find out what occurs. I could see how the story was supposed to end, but honestly, I didn't really experience it. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the main character I admired her trying to be brave, but I found myself cringing a lot about the decisions she made. I also felt very frustrated with her throughout the novel. The main character is not supposed to be perfect but frequently overreacts and is, in general, very impulsive and doesn't think before she acts which adds unnecessary tension to the plot. I loved the prince. On the positive side, the book has the perfect blend of romance, rebellion, secrets, and rivalry. It wasn’t my favourite, but I was hooked to read until the very end. The love triangle between the protagonist, America and the other two males’ love triangle did keep me turning the pages and I like how the book was filled with lots of drama and events. Anyone who likes royal-filled dystopian love stories should read this book.
