Caraval is a dazzling YA novel, set in a spectacular world of magic and mystery. Scarlett and Donatella Dragna have always been incredibly close and protective of each other, living in their father’s strict household. Until one night, when Tella has mysteriously vanished. Frightened of what might have become of her beloved sister, Scarlett makes a deal with Julian, a charming sailor with a secret he doesn’t want revealed. Soon Scarlett enters the magical game of Caraval, a dangerous game, with a desirable reward of one wish. Scarlett will compete against all odds to beat others and herself to rescue her sister. Along the way she meets many new people, including Dante, an ill-mannered contestant who will stop at nothing to win, Aiko, a perplexing Caraval player with a sketchbook of secrets, and the mysterious and elusive Caraval Master Legend. In a game that requires more sacrifice than money, Scarlett knows she must find Tella before the last night of Caraval… or before someone else does.

I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it made me wish Caraval was real. The characters were for the most part interesting and complex. The only exception might have been Scarlett, as she didn’t really have much of a personality, besides wanting to save her sister. However, Julian, Legend, and Aiko were terrific characters and I’d love to read more about them. The plot twists were also great; I didn’t see them coming at all! My favourite part of this book is the world. The whole concept of Caraval is intriguing and the author created very detailed descriptions in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read and enjoyed Shadow and Bone or Serpent and Dove. Also to anyone who likes fantasy and sisterly bonds.
