The Summer I Turned Pretty: Jenny Han

Reviewed by Fatima, Grade 10

Rating: 4/5

Genre: Romance, Coming of age

Plot Summary: It reveals the story of Belly who only exists in the summertime. In the town of Cousins that she has gone to every single summer since her birth, she has everything she needs. The Fishers have always viewed Belly and her family as a part of theirs. Susannah, the lady of the Fisher house is behaving oddly this summer. The two fisher boys, Conrad and Jeremiah, always seem to make summer the paradise that she loves. Although she is younger, Belly has always had an immense crush on Conrad, who appears dark and moody but fun and intelligent at the same time. Jenny Han describes the classic story of heartbreak and first love all at the same moment.

This book was extremely pleasant. The book explains Belly's character incredibly well and what she is was going through, it's almost like you are Belly herself. The simple details make such a difference and keep the reader at the edge trying to figure out what is going on and what is going to happen next. I personally really enjoyed this book because it's exactly my cup of tea. To me, this book is a comforting read and a work I would read over and over again. It is a classic romance book that gives you many twists and turns making you dizzy until you reach the end., you can see the love and the energy right when you pick up the book. The writing is very realistic and many people can correlate to it, the first love and how difficult it is. The book itself touches on many characteristics of a teenager who is being misinformed of their life, the hardships and problems of families are also found scattered within the book. This novel brings light to the fact that everyone's life is difficult and that you should not judge one or assume that your life is harder than another. You should think fairly and assume that everyone has their own business going, that they are not willing to talk about freely. This read is a page-turning. Every page is filled with more suspense and drama. You get frustrated at some parts but what is romance without a few problems! I recommend this novel if you love excitement, tense situations, and romance, this book would be the ideal choice for you.
