Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

By J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne

I didn't enjoy reading this book.

I read this book a few years ago, being so excited to read the eighth book of the Harry Potter series. My expectations were sky-high, so that didn't stop the disappointment from crashing down on me like a tsunami when I finally finished reading.

The storyline confused me A LOT. So much that I even neglected to include a description in this review since I don't think I'd be able to make sense of any of it. The book deals with time travel, which I always found hard to understand. I felt like the characters were jumping through so many strands of time that I couldn't keep track of what was happening. I also didn't understand how they came to some of the scenarios they did. It was just a big jumble of word spaghetti to me.

I also didn't enjoy the way the story was written. I know it was supposed to be for a play, but publishing it as the eighth book of the Harry Potter saga was a mistake. It didn't have enough detail for you to get immersed in the story, so it lost the best part of the reading experience. It also failed to explain a lot of the events in the story. I felt like it would just jump from James and Albus Potter getting on the train to Hogwarts to James and Albus riding a giant chicken in 1856 or something. There just wasn't enough time to lead up to the main events, making the script feel rushed.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to revisit their favourite characters from Harry Potter, but I wouldn't treat this as anything more than fanfiction at best. It needs a lot of improvements, and there are many more worthwhile novels to read.
