Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse is the 2023 sequel to the animated movie Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson and Kemp Powers. This film follows teenage Miles Morales who is Brooklyn’s spider-man. The story begins with Miles reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Spider-woman) and going on an adventure across the Multiverse where they encounter a team of spider-people led by Miguel O’Hara. As well as spider society, where they find out there are a ton of spider people just like them but in alternate universes. One of the main conflicts that the protagonist (Miles Morales) faces is a conflict within himself. He fights very hard to not end up with the same fate that every spiderman canonically has to face. Miles always feels the need to save everyone, he and Miguel have a conflict for this reason. There’s also Spot, the antagonist of the story. The black and white blob was no more than an inconvenience for them at first, but eventually grew stronger and stronger by going to the Alchaemaxes of several dimensions. This film expands a lot of Miles’ character as he grows older. It takes a turn from the first movie and instead focuses on deeper topics and more complex character building. As an avid fan of Into the Spider-verse and someone who has seen that film lots of times, I went into this film not expecting it to be better or comparable to the first. I was very impressed - somehow the animation techniques have gotten more unique and nice to look at, as if the first film wasn’t already impressive enough. I absolutely loved the new characters as well, in spider-verse movies they never fail to deliver loveable and quirky characters. I give across the Spider-verse a 5/5. I would recommend this to anyone, the animation making the story be easily understood by younger audiences yet the complex plot and characters still make it a great watch for audiences of all ages.
