Deepfake

Sarah Darer Littman

Maia

Grade 9

4/5

This book is about a girl named Dara Simons, who is finally at a point in her life where she feels as though everything is perfect. She has the perfect boyfriend, perfect grades, and is in the process of competing for valedictorian. That is, until a deep fake video of her was released. In this video, Dara is accusing her boyfriend of cheating on his SAT. Everyone sees the video, and suddenly Dara’s perfect life comes crashing down. Dara swears over and over again that she did not say any of the things in the video, but it's hard to believe her when there is literal video proof. Is Dara telling the truth?

Deepfake is a very intriguing book that not only can be interesting to read but can educate people on technology and deep fakes. I liked this book, although it isn’t the genre I usually enjoy. It was a book that taught me not to trust everything you see online, and also kept me hooked throughout reading because of the riveting plot.

I think that teens and older age groups would enjoy this book, as it includes high-school aged characters and lots of social media/technology in it. I also think people who enjoy a realistic and possibly relatable book would find this to be a good read. If you like books along the topics or genres of real-life, relatable, realistic, or any sort of teen fiction, this book will probably be something you would like to read.
