Wild Cards XII: Turn of the Cards by George R.R. Martin and Victor Milán

Reviewed by Neil, Grade 12 Rating: 4/5

The variety of genres and themes explored in Turn of the Cards is one of the anthology's strengths. There are stories about politics, personal relationships, and even time travel. The authors do a fantastic job of balancing the various themes and genres, resulting in a cohesive anthology that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

The writing quality is another standout feature of Turn of the Cards. Each story is well-crafted and engaging, with vivid descriptions and strong characters. The anthology contains stories by a variety of authors, but the writing quality is consistently high. George R.R. Martin and Victor Milán, the editors, have done an excellent job of selecting stories that fit well together and highlight the strengths of the Wild Card universe.

Turn of the Cards' characters are diverse and memorable, and the writers do an excellent job of delving into their motivations and desires. Some are heroes, while others are villains or anti-heroes. Each story provides a distinct perspective on the Wild Cards universe, and the characters are all complex and well-developed.

Turn of the Cards' world-building is also impressive, with each story adding new depth to the series' established lore. The authors investigate the ramifications of living in a world where some people have superpowers while others do not. They also delve into the universe's politics and power struggles, as well as the personal relationships affected by superpowers.

Overall, I strongly suggest Wild Cards XII: Turn of the Cards. With engaging characters, well-crafted stories, and impressive world-building, the anthology is a fantastic addition to the Wild Cards series. It is a must-read for fans of the series as well as anyone who enjoys dark superhero stories.
