Black Panther: Panther's Rage by Sheree Renée Thomas

Reviewed by Neil, Grade 12

Rating: 4/5

Sheree's Panther's Rage Renée Thomas exemplifies how graphic novels can address complex issues such as race, identity, and power. The story is set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda and follows T'Challa, the Black Panther, as he battles a rebellion led by Erik Killmonger, a former Wakandan who seeks to overthrow the royal family. T'Challa is portrayed as a complex and multifaceted character, with a strong sense of duty and responsibility to his people. He is not only a skilled fighter but also a strategist, diplomat, and scientist, making him a well-rounded and fascinating protagonist.

The story is divided into six chapters, each illustrated by a different artist, giving the narrative visual variety. The illustrations are vibrant and alive, capturing the spirit of Wakanda and its people.

Panther's Rage is a fantastic adventure story that also serves as a commentary on the role of power and responsibility. T'Challa, as the Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda, faces both external and internal challenges. He must strike a balance between his duty to protect his kingdom and his personal beliefs and values, as well as accept the consequences of his actions.

The plot delves into issues of identity and belonging as well. T'Challa, as a Black superhero, struggles with the expectations of his people and the wider world. He must strike a balance between his responsibilities to Wakanda and his role as a member of the larger Black community.

Panther's Rage also addresses colonialism and its aftermath. As a technologically advanced African nation, Wakanda has never been colonized, and its people have preserved their traditions and way of life. The rebellion led by Killmonger, on the other hand, exposes the underlying tensions between Wakanda and the rest of the world, highlighting the ongoing effects of colonialism and racism.

Overall, Panther's Rage is a compelling graphic novel with well-developed characters and stunning illustrations that explores complex themes. It's a fantastic addition to the Black Panther canon and a must-read for fans of both the character and the Marvel universe.
