The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Ratings: 5/5

The Silent Patient is truly one of the best thrillers I’ve ever come across. This book, written by Alex Michaelides, is a masterpiece. To begin with, the main characters in this book involve Alicia, Theo, and Gabriel.  Alicia Berenson is married to Gabriel Berenson when one day she gets accused of murdering her husband by shooting him 5 times. After that incident, Alicia doesn’t deny nor accepts the accusation, goes completely silent and never speaks again. When she is admitted to the hospital, many psychotherapists come and go because they were unable to make her speak. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist takes upon the impossible task of making Alicia speak again when many before him have failed to accomplish the same. He truly believes that he can accomplish in making her speak because there seems to be a “connection” between the two. To say I wasn’t shocked by the plot twist would be beyond ridiculous. While many people are able to figure out plot twists easily, it isn’t the same for me. Obviously, anyone can tell from the beginning that Theo has a major part in the plot, but I was never able to predict actual role in the story aside from being Alicia’s psychotherapist. The main question is why is Theo trying so hard to get her to speak when he could’ve given up just like the other psychotherapists? I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys stories that get to the plot right away.
