One of Us is Next

Karen M. McManus

Zahra, 10

4/5

One of Us is Next is the sequel to One of Us is Lying, both written by Karen M. McManus. It takes place 18 months after the incident with Simon Keller. Throughout the months, there have been many people that have tried to copy the gossip app. The 3 main characters, Phoebe, who was the first target of the new gossip app called “Truth or Dare” and she plays truth, but it was pretty ugly. Maeve, who is sisters with Bronwyn and was key to the mystery of Simon, chooses to dare. Lastly, Knox, who had dated Maeve but are now great friends, was a key but affected character in this story. These characters follow the journey of another mystery, with suspense and shock.

One of Us is Next the sequel to One of Us is Lying, which I did read. To compare the two books, I personally liked One of Us is Lying, better compared to the sequel, which is what happens with most books anyways. But, that's not to say it was bad, it was a decent read. The story was easy to follow along and was well written. The last book was shocking, on who was behind it all. This one, I was somewhat able to foreshadow the person behind it all. Something I really liked was how the characters were written, especially their relationship. The description and depth through the characters was something I loved. On top of that, the relationship and the character development in this book was exceptional. The first one had a lot more plot twists and adventures that the readers would travel on, compared to this book. The ending was not my favourite to say the least. But overall, Karen is a great author and her books are ones to read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has read the first book. The age category I would place it under would be ages 13 and up. It does need a little bit of maturity from the Reader so ages 13 and up would be the best to enjoy and understand the book.
