Heartless By Marissa Meyers

Jasmine, Grade 9

The novel Heartless By Marissa Meyer is the origin story for the Queen of Hearts. Catherine is the most desired girl in Wonderland. But she wants nothing more than to start a bakery with her friend Mary Ann. While at a ball that is supposed to end with Catherine’s engagement to the king of Wonderland, she meets Jest. A boy unlike all those she has met. As Catherine spends more time with Jest, she gets caught up in the darkest parts of Wonderland. Tea parties, mazes and pumpkins begin to fill her life along the ever present mystery of Jest. Catherine tries to navigate her ever changing world and not go mad in the process.

I love Heartless. It is one of my favorite reads by one of my favourite authors. I love the author's take on Wonderland. It feels so new but still retains the iconic madness that makes Wonderland so entertaining. All of the characters are well written and believable. You end up caring for each and every one of them. The plot is amazingly written and so much fun to read. It keeps you guessing at every turn. This book will have you smiling and crying by the time you finish reading. Any one who likes fantasy or fairy tales with a twist will adore this book. It’s perfectly suited for teenage bookworms. I would and have recommended this book to friends. It’s a great read all around. I give this book a 5/5.
