The Hunger Games is not an ordinary book. The main character, Katniss, is a 16 year old girl from a poor family of her mother and her younger sister Prim. She hunts with her friend Gale and brings home food for her family. Her father died in a mine explosion when she was 11, his death affected Katniss and her family in many ways. Throughout the story, Katniss remembers lessons that she learned from her father and applies them to everyday life, some of which are lifesavers. Prim is Katniss’ biggest priority so she takes care of Prim and keeps her out of danger, which is why she volunteered as District 12’s female tribute when Prim’s name was chosen in the reaping. Katniss puts her life at risk for Prim’s safety. Shortly after Katniss volunteered as a tribute Peeta, the baker’s son, volunteered too.

Before leaving to board the train to the games Madge, Katniss’ classmate, gives her a mockingjay pin. The pin symbolizes rebellion against the capitol and hope. Katniss carries and keeps it on her chest throughout the games and to the end of the story. Before the games begin, Katniss and Peeta trained for when their lives were about to be at stake, also interviews were conducted on the last night. During Peeta’s interview, he confesses his love for Katniss which shocks the audience, but she assumes that he was acting so that the two of them could be more memorable by the audience to possibly get more sponsors.

The 74th Hunger Games begin, 24 tributes get released into the arena. There were many sad and disturbing deaths. Katniss is not a fighter, she’s smart and stealthy. She makes allies with a girl from District 11. Later, her ally gets killed by a tribute leaving the reader saddened after all that she has meant to Katniss. When only a few tributes are left, the head gamemaker, Claudius Templesmith, announces a rule change that two tributes from the same district can win together.

The rule change relieved everyone that they can win together instead of killing each other. The two tributes partner up and the romance begins. Katniss goes along with the “act” for the audience and kisses Peeta. Meanwhile, Peeta is happier than ever thinking that his crush loves him back. The couple goes through obstacles against other tributes which in the end leaves them as the winning tributes. As a reader, I was excited until Claudius made another rule change. He announces that there can now only be one winner. The lovebirds now fear each other, but pull a near suicide stunt which could’ve killed both of them. Luckily, Claudius changes the rule back again to what it was before so Katniss and Peeta live. After they’ve been healed and interviewed, Peeta gets heartbroken when he learns Katniss' love was fake all along, leaving the reader in disappointment. This story is truly an emotional rollercoaster on an exciting yet heartbreaking cliffhanger.
