Bo Burnham: Inside

Directed By Bo Burnham

Jenna, grade 12

Rating: 5/5

Bo Burnham is a man of many talents and film happens to be one of them. In May of 2021, he released “Inside”, a musical comedy special that he, alone, created over the course of 2020. There are many things I can say about this special. For one, the songs used throughout the special are amazing. They are so catchy, I catch myself singing all day. They are so well produced and many lyrics speak truth to current events, mental health, etc, while also using humour.

For example, one of the more popular songs, “Welcome to the Internet”, speaks on the unlimited access that we, as people, have to the internet. Burnham begins by talking about the juxtaposition of everything possible to find through the internet and goes on to describe the simpler world before it all, as well as the younger generations’ dependence on it. I appreciate the overall message because I truly agree with the statement that children’s whole world comes from the internet and it will only become more chaotic.

Though Burnham created this special with the genre of musical and comedy, there is so much raw emotion and relatability within it. He isn’t afraid to talk about his worsening mental health, which many suffered with through the midst of the pandemic. It is very emotional but it is real.

I would recommend this special to any person who has previously watched and enjoyed Bo Burnham’s other two specials, as this one is very cinematic and has such high production! I would also recommend this to anyone who struggled through the pandemic, whether you are a teen, adult, or child. If you struggled, mentally, socially, physically, or all of the above, Inside shows that you are not alone.
