Baby Driver

Directed by Edgar Wright

Brooklyn, Grade 11

5/5 Stars

Ansel Elgort stars in this 2017 movie as Baby, a getaway driver working to pay off his debt to a powerful crime boss. Baby constantly wears headphones, blaring his favourite music, as an escape for the constant noise that comes with having tinnitus, which in Baby’s case is a result of an accident he was involved in as a child. After the death of his mother, Baby begins stealing cars, leading to the accidental destruction of heist planner Doc’s car and belongings. With a large sum of money owed to Doc, Baby begins working as the getaway driver for all of Doc’s heists. Only one job away from working off his debt, Baby meets Debora, a waitress at a nearby diner. Baby continues to drive, fall in love, and listen to music throughout this thrilling, gripping film.

Baby is portrayed as a smart young man who simply got mixed up in the wrong world with the wrong people. He is kind and caring to others but takes his job seriously when he must do so. After the death of his parents, he was adopted by an older gentleman, Joseph. As Joseph grew old, Baby has begun to take care of him instead. Buddy and Darling, two members of the heist operation, are powerful and hardworking criminals. Bats, another member of Doc’s crew, often refers to himself as “mental”. He has many violent outbursts, using irrational ways to solve very simple problems. Debora bonds with Baby over a shared love of music and driving. Working at Bo’s Diner, Debora doesn’t know much about quiet, shy Baby, but quickly falls in love with what she does know about him.

I loved this moving because it was so unique! It was a musical action movie, filled with guns, fighting, and popular music. It is a rare movie as it is hard to find a crime movie that can make the watcher smile and laugh so much throughout. In my opinion, this is one of the most original, individualistic heist films ever created. It’s funny, romantic, and packed full of high velocity action all through the movie!
