Teen Reviewer - Oscar (Grade 12)

The title of the DVD -  Meg 2: The Trench

Directed by Ben Wheatley

I’d rate this movie 2 Stars

Meg 2: The Trench is the sequel to the 2018 action film The Meg. Jason Stratham returns in the role of Jonas Taylor rescue and deep sea diver. The Trench is set five years after The Meg. We are shown that in the five years time span Jonas Taylor has been fighting environment crimes and helping to put away the bad guys.

Meanwhile the Oceanic research facility Mana One has kept an orphaned Meg called Haiqi in captivity and team leader Jiuming has been trying to train and build a relationship with her.

The Mana One team lead submersible vehicles down into the Mariana trench on exploration missions. On this occasion without their knowledge Haiqi escapes captivity and follows them through the thermocline.

During their dive the Mana One team discovers a criminal mining operation trenching the Ocean floor collecting earth minerals while devastating the ecosystem.

The movies storyline continues with the Mana One teams fight against the mercenaries hired to mine, run ins with various giant ocean creatures and the team members survival.  In addition the breach in the thermocline has allowed several deep water creatures to reach the surface and head towards tourists at a nearby island. Chaos follows.

I am giving this movie just two stars  because although it has lots of action, it has a poor plot, terrible acting, and too many unrealistic storylines. I do not recommend this movie to any age group. Spend two hours doing homework or chores, you’ll probably enjoy it more.
