Five Survive

Author: Holly Jackson

Natalia (12) 3/5

In this murder mystery novel by Holly Jackson, things take a turn for the worst when Kenny, otherwise known as Red, goes on a road trip with five of her friends - Maddie, Oliver, Reyna, Arthur and Simon.

Red and her friends were on their way to Gulf Shores in Alabama for a much needed spring break. During the trip the friends lost service on their cell phones and were left having to find their way with no GPS to guide them. When they decided to turn around and head home after being parked on an unfamiliar road their tires were shot out as well as their gas tank. The six friends were held hostage by the mafia who Red thought was her fault since she was a witness to a murder that was committed by the Philadelphia mafia. Oliver and Maddy also think the mafia was out to get them as their mother Catherine is a well known district attorney.

Red who has blamed herself for years for her mother's death finally got answers on why she was killed and who did it. Red learns that sibling Maddie and Oliver’s mother was the one responsible for her mothers death. Their mother was working with the Philadelphia mafia, leaking information to them for years. Catherine - the siblings mother- found out that Red’s mother knew about her treachery and killed her to keep her secret.

While I enjoyed this book I would definitely change a few things if I could. For example, I wish we were able to get to know Arthur a little bit more, but completely understand why his character was not explored more until the end of the novel.
