Title: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Director: Joel Crawford

N&G: Sergei, Grade 12

Rating: 5/5

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish defied the expectations of being a sequel to a mediocre Shrek spin-off and created an artistic and heartfelt story about coming to terms with one’s own mortality and the appreciation of life. The movie follows a fan favourite character from the Shrek series Puss in Boots, with him not being able accept his loss of the eight lives that he had and going on a journey to find the mystical “last wish” and restore all of the lives that he lost. All of the characters, including main and side, are extremely vibrant and filled with personality. Personalities that the viewer will gravitate towards or be repulsed by, with the villains of the film being both scary and aggravating, showing the common flaws we see in the everyday world. One of the biggest draws of this film is its bombastic style of animation. There isn’t a single frame that is not filled with vibrance and colour, being both pleasant to the eye and captivating to the mind. The action scenes of the movie follow suit, with some scenes looking straight out of a comic book or an anime. The animation is great for both old and young viewers, with the younger audience enjoying the ferocity of colour and stylish choreography and the older audience experiencing a form of nostalgia due to a large similarity with the animation of their time. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a film that is extremely difficult to find boring, with an amazingly heartfelt and captivating plot and an animation style that is pleasant and fun to watch.
