My name is Rachael (grade 11), and I would rate Pokémon: Let’s go Pikachu 3/5.

Released in 2018 by Nintendo, this expanded remake of Pokémon yellow follows the series typical formula. Players will travel through the world, collecting and battling Pokémon, with the end goal of defeating the elite four. While this game does little to rock the boat, the classic Pokémon formula will always have its fans, and the ability to have your Pokémon adventure alongside you is a charming addition. Two other changes where also made in this version. The first of which is the way to catch Pokémon. Instead of the traditional tactic of using your own Pokémon to weaken a wild Pokémon before capturing it, this game just requires you to approach the creature and begin winging poke-balls at it, a change likely made to bring it more in line with the capture system in Pokémon Go. However, this removes need to carefully calculate the right number of attacks to weaken a Pokémon, and the thrill of just barely capturing a strong one, leaving the game missing something. Furthermore, you cannot remove your starting Pikachu from your party, filling a slot where you might want to have more of your own favourite Pokémon. Gameplay is almost sarcastically easy, and I’ve always been one of those people who want an official hard mode for Pokémon games. However it’s level of difficulty does make it highly accessible to children. A full play-though will likely take around 25 hours, 54 to see everything the game has to offer. In conclusion, this game will likely be enjoyed by children and fans of the traditional Pokémon formula. While it lacks depth, its a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, and likely holds a lot of nostalgia for some.
