It's been 60 years since we have seen the classic characters in the 1961 classic West Side Story directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, and director Steven Spielberg was eager to revive this story once again. West Side Story is set in 1957 and revolves around the forbidden love between Tony and Maria, as they come from rival gangs; the sharks versus the jets. The rivalry between the sharks and the jets pushes the two away when they first meet. Throughout the movie, they try to sneak around with their relationship so that nobody knows they are mixing from opposing sides. These gangs have decided on a rumble that will happen between the two of them as they are trying to declare who the land owner is. This movie contains many musical numbers very similar to the first, but some have a fun and new twist on them.
In my opinion, West Side Story (2021) is a fantastic movie with great cinematography and very vibrant colours the movie. With a PG-13 rating, I believe that people of all ages will enjoy this movie. There may be some sensitive topics to some as this movie is set in the 50s.
