Here at the Barrie Public Library, we believe poetry is important because it uniquely captures and communicates human emotions, experiences, and perspectives, fostering empathy, reflection, and cultural heritage. Join us as we celebrate National Poetry Month this April!

What is National Poetry Month?

National Poetry Month takes place every April to celebrate poetry and its vital place in Canada’s culture. This celebration was started by the non-profit organization The League of Canadian Poets (LCP). They are dedicated to supporting poets, building poetic communities, supporting inclusive free expression, and promoting Canadian poets and poetry.

The theme for this year’s National Poetry Month is weather. "Through sun, snow, rain, wind, fog, and many other iterations, we find the captivating presence of weather. With poetic flair, weather dictates the rhythms of our lives from coast to coast," says LCP. We invite you to explore the experiences, feelings, and inspiration that weather offers.

How to Get Involved

Attend Accessing Creativity with Tyneisha Thomas
To celebrate National Poetry Month, we are excited to host Tyneisha “Ty” Thomas for the last installment of the Youth United Speaker Series. We invite you to join us on Wednesday, April 10 from 5-7pm at the Downtown Library.

Ty the Poetess is the City of Barrie’s fourth Poet Laureate. Ty will help you spark your creativity with poetry and writing tips. You will leave the session with your very own piece of creative writing.

Celebrate Online
LCP will be sharing content to celebrate poetry all month long. Follow @CanadianPoets on Facebook and Instagram to stay in the loop.

LCP also encourages you to share poems (original or not) on social media under the hashtag #todayspoem. Using this hashtag is a great way to discover new ports and performers through social media.

Borrow a Title from Our Poetry Collection
We also encourage you to browse our poetry collection to join in this month’s poetry celebration:
