As is typical with construction projects, we experienced some delays which extended the closure longer than expected. We took advantage of this time to complete some important projects:
- Terrazzo Flooring Repairs: This was the reason for our closure. The terrazzo was original to the building and had many deficiencies, cracks, and missing pieces. These damaged sections were removed and replaced - read below for more information on how terrazzo floors are installed.
- Installed new wireless access points: Our Information Technology team installed new wireless access points in all our locations. Patrons will notice increased internet speeds as they’re using our computers and browsing on their own devices.
- Improved accessibility of our collections: Staff raised our Adult Non-Fiction collection higher on the shelves to make them more accessible.
- Staff Training: All staff gathered for one day to engage in training and development opportunities.
- General Repairs and Maintenance: Repairs to walls and painting was completed along with other general maintenance projects.
Terrazzo Flooring
Terrazzo is a durable, sustainable flooring option that is resistant to moisture, microbes, and mold. With proper care, it can last 40-100 years. It’s typically installed in commercial and public buildings and places with high traffic – think train stations, schools, and even the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Installing a Terrazzo Floor
- Shot blasting ensures floor is level and prepared for adhesion.
- Divider strips are placed to divide patterns and add structure.
- Composite material is used as a binder, like cement or epoxy combined with marble, glass or quartz chips that add the colour and pattern.
- The composite is applied to the surface by trowel.
- After the floor is cured, it undergoes a rough grinding process (dry and/or wet), followed by honing and polishing.
- Once grinding and polishing is complete a sealer is applied, bringing out the brilliance and shine and protecting the floor.
