FAQs
FAQs Description
Can I bring my own supplies?
It depends on the machine. You can use your own supplies for the following machines:
- Cricuts
- Cricut Easy Press
- Glowforge (provided it's on our accepted list)
- Sewing Machines
But we do require that you purchase/use BPL supplies for:
- Mugs, tumblers, and hats
- Filament for 3D printer
- Sublimation paper
There are also some materials that must be specific brands or formats to work with Creative Spaces equipment. It's always best to check with library staff before beginning a project.
Do I need a library card?
Yes, to use the Glowforge or 3D printer, you must have a library card. Supervision by a parent or guardian is required if the user is under the age of 13.
How do I access the machines?
You should always check in with staff at the front desk when you want to use Creative Spaces equipment. Most equipment and tools are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, appointments are necessary for specific machines such as the Glowforge and the 3D printer, which can be scheduled online. A library card is also required to sign on to any of the Creative Spaces lab computers. Information regarding booking frequency and duration is provided as well. Some machines also require certification.
Will staff be there to help me?
While our staff are available to help with quick questions and machine setup, please keep in mind that they are not able to walk you through an entire project. We encourage you to take ownership of your work—it's all part of becoming a confident and enthusiastic maker! Remember, you can always explore our Maker Workshops and other resources to gain the skills you need for independent creation.
Are there any costs?
Our Creative Spaces are designed to make technology and digital resources accessible and affordable for everyone. Our pricing is set to cover the cost of materials, equipment tools, and upkeep. Remember, creativity often involves trial and error! You can find all our Creative Spaces fees listed in our Price Guide.
When is Creative Spaces open?
Creative Spaces is open whenever the library is open! We ask that all projects be completed (saved, finished, cleaned up) approximately 30 minutes before the library’s closing time.
How do I learn to use the machines?
We offer many different learning options: self-directed online tutorials, in-person studio workshops with small groups, and drop in 1-1 sessions. You can find these on our Event Calendar and on our Digital Resources page.
You can also check out our Equipment page, which lists each tool we have available.
Some quality resources accessible for free with your library card include:
We are, of course, available to offer support, but we encourage you to work as independently as possible.
Are there things I’m not allowed to print/engrave/cut?
You can’t create items that are illegal under provincial or federal law, or items that are unsafe, harmful, obscene, dangerous, or pose an immediate threat to the wellbeing of others. This includes weapons or weapon components, sexually explicit material, material that is in violation of intellectual property rights, copyright law, patent or trademark protection, or items that contravene the library's Public Internet and Technology Use Policy. The library reserves the right to halt, delete or disallow the creation of items that it deems to be inappropriate.
All activity in the Creative Spaces is subject to the rules in our Patron Conduct Policy
Is my project guaranteed to work?
We can't promise that every project will turn out perfectly. Creating things is all about experimenting, and sometimes things don't go as planned. But don't worry, we're here to help you out as much as we can. Just keep in mind that you are responsible for the results of your creation.
Can I drop off a file to be printed/engraved for me?
No, you must be in the building to do a project. You must also remain with your project at all times. Staff are available to answer questions and direct you towards helpful resources and instructions so you can complete your work independently.
