Since it is National Poetry Month, I thought it would be fitting to talk about a short poem that I wrote in the past. It may not be up to a great standard in terms of poetry, but it is written from the heart. Here is the poem:

A Mirror- By: Arjun

A mirror

An angel emerges out of its glow of light

Its appearance refined out of gold

Its face bashes negativity with its chiseled shield of beauty

It lets its wings fly as free as a bird

When the light flickers out

A demon

Is hidden in the dark

From this poem, I believe it talks about a common theme in literature, which is things are not always as it seems. I signified the mirror as a reality check since it can see what I can’t see, and when looked upon, it removes all doubt. This relates to me at the moment as when I first heard about COVID-19, I never thought about the possibility that it would come close to my area, and cause people to take extreme measures to protect their safety. I always thought it was something that just came, but will go soon, and overall, it will not affect me at all. I wish that at that time, when I first heard about it, that I took the time to reflect, like the mirror does, so that I can be better prepared to face the prospect of the virus, and not feel caught off guard in the future. Now, as were in the present, cases have been rising, and does not look like it will go away anytime soon. This, in a way, relates to those people who have this ideal image of going about their life like they did pre-COVID. Seeing it that way is what is making our cases rise. Those people should reflect, like I did with my hypothetical mirror, to understand the horrors of their actions, and that they must follow the safety protocols to at least stay safe away from the virus not just for themselves, but for others as well.

On that note, I had a great time analyzing my poem and sharing my thoughts about it as in a way, I got to know more about myself and my surroundings. I encourage everyone to write, or look up a poem that they may or may not have written, and just take the time to analyze how it relates to you. Thank you for listening!
