The 5th Wave
Director: J Blakeson
Hongyue, Grade 10
3/5 Stars
The 5th Wave is about an alien invasion. The aliens, known as Others, split their attack
into 5 waves. The 1st wave was an electromagnetic pulse that destroyed the world's
communication system and electricity. The 2nd wave was a streak of natural disasters such as
tsunamis and earthquakes. The 3rd wave was a disease that spread through birds. The 4th wave
was the Others coming off their spaceship and possessing humans which caused mistrust among
them. The 5th wave hasn't happened yet, and that is where the movie takes place. Through this
phase we follow Cassie, a high schooler who is looking for her younger brother. We also meet
Ben, who is recruited into an army to fight the aliens but are instead tricked into fighting other
humans.
Ben spends the movie leading a squad of children who are supposedly being trained to
fight the Others. However, the Others have infiltrated the base and taken control of the military
leaders and tricked the army of children to kill other humans.
The Others are an alien race who have picked earth to colonies, in order to do so, they
must eliminate the human race.
Evan is a human who has been taken over by an Other. However, through his love for
Cassie, he manages to regain his humanity through the movie and help the main cast of
characters.
This movie is pretty predictable. The concept is very generic and can be compared to
every other alien invasion movie. However, this is still a pretty decent movie to watch when you
have nothing else to do. I recommend it to people who like science fiction and action movies.
