Title: “Alex Rider: Stormbreaker”

Author: Anthony Horowitz

Reviewer: Cyrus Shobeir, Gr. 8

Score: 5/5

“Alex Rider: Stormbreaker” is a book about an English boy named Alex Rider. Over the course of the book, Alex becomes a spy for the British MI6 as a result of his deceased uncle also being a spy. This book is the first of ten books in the Alex Rider Series. I did enjoy reading this book, and I think for the type of book it was, the book was extremely well written.

This book begins with Alex attending the funeral for his uncle, Ian Rider, who Alex believed to be a bank manager at the time. During the funeral, Alex notices that a taxi driver at the funeral had a gun. One thing leads to another, and later, Alex learns from a man named Alan Blunt that his uncle was a spy for a branch of the English government known as MI6. Also, Blunt tells Alex that MI6 requires his help to investigate a billionaire named Herod Sale, who is about to supply British schools with new, top of the line computers known as “Stormbreakers”.

Throughout this exiting, action-packed book, Anthony Horowitz’s articulate but suspenseful writing works extremely well to keep the story flowing and to keep the reader engaged. While there are many gaps in the action, I was not bored for a moment while reading this book, as Horowitz weaves together each part of the story in a seamless style that doesn’t release the tension until the very last page. I enjoyed reading this book, and I think my sentiment would be shared by most. However, because of the nature and style of the book, I think it is best suited to those aged 10-13. Overall, I think “Alex Rider: Stormbreaker” is a great, exciting action book and an even better introduction to the Alex Rider series.
