The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Reviewed by Leigh - Grade 11

The Upside of Unrequited is set in Washington DC when gay marriage was first legalised. The story follows two seventeen-year-old twin sisters, Molly and Cassie, through their summer adventures of love and heartbreak. Cassie falls madly in love with Mia. Cassie then has to juggle spending time with her girlfriend and making sure to stay close to her sister. That gets harder as Molly starts to have love interests of her own, Will - Mia’s best friend. It starts out like the perfect fairy tale for Molly and Cassie, falling in love with best friends, but will it be a fairy tale ending? Molly gets a job at a local home accessories store and starts working with Reid. Reid who wears bright white sneakers but can make her laugh at even the strangest of moments. While the twins are discovering love, their two moms are preparing for their wedding at the end of the summer. The story follows this entangled web of new love and old love through a summer of romance, discovery, hardship and change.

I rate this book a 5/5. It is an amazing heartfelt love story that makes you feel all warm and cozy on the inside. The plot is rich with emotion that pulls at your heart strings. The characters have the perfect amount of depth and humour to them. Anyone who loves humorous and emotional stories would enjoy this book.
