‘Insurgent’ written by Veronica Roth is the second book of three in the Divergent series. This novel takes place in a dystopian setting following the main character Tris and her friends as they continue on their adventure of exposing the truth behind what the Council (their government) is really up to and the secrets they’re hiding from everyone and the true intentions of their society. As Tris and her friends move farther into their journey visiting different factions, they find out they are in danger and have become fugitives and certain members of the Council will do whatever it takes to stop them from going any deeper into uncovering the truth of their society. Throughout this journey, Tris is faced with a lot more than she’s used to, both physically and mentally. Whether it’s unexpected obstacles, betrayals, or intense battles. Tris learns that what may not seem like such a big decision can lead to having to make some major sacrifices, and then she needs to learn to cope with the guilt and regret and that the simple world that she once knew, had so much more to it than she could ever understand.

This novel would have to be my favourite out of the series, there are so many new characters showing different perspectives of many unique people from all of the factions and we even get to hear the stories from those who are factionless (refugees who either didn’t get put into a faction or those who fled). There are many plot twists which keep you interested as well, like unexpected battles and attacks. In this book Tris also explores different emotions and we really get to see her grow as a person, adapting to new environments and truly finding herself. This is why I think this book would be good for pre-teens and teenagers since that is around the age you begin branching out and discovering who you are which can be hard at times, so seeing it from another perspective can be more relatable. I would rate this book a 5/5, it is such an interesting and unique take on the whole dystopian genre and it incorporates so many different perspectives, I loved reading this book and never wanted to set it down, it has a little bit of everything in it; thrill, romance, adventure, etc. This is a really good book and I’d definitely read it again.
