Divergent’ written by Veronica Roth is a dystopian novel set in a futuristic world split into five factions, each representing a different trait. Abnegation shows selflessness, Candor is honesty, Amity is peace, Dauntless shows bravery, and Erudite is intelligence, when a member of this community turns sixteen they get to participate in the “Choosing Ceremony”, this is when they get to choose what faction they will spend the rest of their life living in. Main character Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior is a teen girl who’s lived in Abnegation her whole life, but has always felt as if she should be somewhere else. During the Choosing Ceremony, Tris makes the bold decision to leave her family behind and join the Dauntless where she is met with a completely different environment. As the book continues, Tris uncovers disturbing secrets, making this place that’s always seemed perfect, not so good after all.
This book is full of many different twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat. I would recommend this for any teenagers or pre-teens since this book can be quite relatable. In the real world, a lot of people are trying to find where they fit in and explore their identity before they reach adulthood, which the main character Tris, a teenager, shows throughout the book as her goal is to find where she belongs in the world and learn to adapt when living in a fast paced environment, constantly trying to keep up. If you enjoyed reading other books like The Maze Runner or The Hunger Games, then you would definitely enjoy this book because they have very similar characteristics and are both set in dystopian societies. I would rate this book a 5/5, as said before, it has many different plot twists so you never know what to expect next which makes you want to continue reading more. It’s also very interesting to see the author’s take on what they think a future society could be like, and I found the different factions with different roles very unique. Overall a great book for many different ages, I would definitely read again.
