Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is certainly a gem in multiplayer gaming. As a long time fan of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise, I knew from the first moment I played this game that I would love it. For starters, there is no main menu. Upon booting up the game, you spawn in the “backyard battleground” which is a massive map with countless areas to explore, items to collect, and secrets to find. It is very fun to play around with friends here and test out different characters. Speaking of characters, this game builds on the already massive selection from its predecessor and has over 100 playable characters across 16 different classes. Each class has a unique playstyle, and each character brings a new approach to their respective class. As for the online experience, the game is still very much alive despite not receiving an update in over 4 years. The two main online game modes are “team vanquish” and “turf takeover” and joining/finding matches in these modes is almost instant. Team vanquish is a very simple gamemode: the plants and zombies battle until one of the teams gets 50 eliminations and wins. Turf takeover, my personal favourite, is a large-scale gamemode where the attacking team must capture strategic locations on the map and push the defenders back until a final minigame determines the winning team. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find matches in most other game modes because not many people play them. As for offline play, there is a PvE mode where the player and their friends can defend against waves of AI enemies. There are also customizable private matches with any gamemode where the host can invite friends and add bots to the game. My only criticism of this game is the maps. While they are still pretty good, they simply don’t have the aesthetic and level of enjoyability as the ones in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Despite the game no longer receiving support, I can say with certainty that Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is still very enjoyable, and not going anywhere anytime soon. I give this game a 5/5.
