“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” Movie Review
By Ryan, Grade 12
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is an animated adventure movie based on the Mario video games. It was released in 2023 and was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. This movie has been long-awaited by many fans of the video game franchise as the last movie adaptation was a live-action film released in 1993 called, “Super Mario Bros.”, but it was not very well-received. This new animated movie definitely lives up to the expectations of fans by providing an incredible nostalgic experience with a great cast, stunning visuals, and an exciting plotline. Overall, I would rate this film adaptation a 3.5/5 stars.
The film starts with the iconic brothers, Mario and Luigi, who are Italian plumbers living in the city of Brooklyn. When they go to explore a broken underground pipe, they accidentally get sucked into a Warp Pipe. Mario ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he meets Toad and Princess Peach. On the other hand, Luigi ends up in the Dark Lands where he is imprisoned by Bowser, who insists on marrying Princess Peach. Mario and the others must rescue Luigi and protect Princess Peach from Bowser, but it is not easy with things like blue-shelled Koopas, Maw-Rays, and Bomber Bill.
I would recommend this movie to long-time Mario fans and to families with kids who like Mario. I think that it does a great job at capturing the essence of the Super Mario franchise, while also keeping viewers interested with an action-filled plot and some humour as well. The cast does a great job at voicing the characters and bringing them to life, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser to name a few of the highlights. It is a very enjoyable movie, and it is even more enjoyable for die-hard fans of the Mario video game franchise.
