"Allegiant" Book Review

By Ryan, Grade 12

“Allegiant” by Veronica Roth is the third and final novel in the “Divergent” trilogy. It was published in 2013, and was supposed to have a two-part movie adaptation, but only the first part was released in 2016. As the conclusion to the series, it explores the events after “Insurgent”, taking the conflict among the Factions and Factionless in Chicago to a whole new level. For the first time in the series, the characters venture out beyond the walls of Chicago to see what exists in the outside world and learn about how the city of Chicago and the Factions were created. Unlike the first two books in the series, Roth writes “Allegiant” from two different perspectives. She uses first person narration to tell the story from the two main characters’ point of views, Tris and Four. Overall, I would rate this book a 4/5 stars.

This book takes place after the Faction system in Chicago has fallen apart, and Four’s Factionless mother, Evelyn, has taken over as the leader of the city. Tris, Four, Christina, Peter, Caleb, Cara, and Uriah all travel outside of the wall to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. There, they meet the leader of the Bureau, David, who tells them about how their city and the Factions were part of his experiment. Soon after being there and learning more about the Bureau, Tris becomes suspicious, and she must find out who she can truly trust while keeping her friends safe.

I would recommend this book to any fans of the first two books, and I would recommend the whole series to people who enjoy reading dystopian fiction. A lot of people were not happy with the ending of the novel, but I personally felt that it gave good closure to the series, despite not being what I would have expected for the ending. This is one of my favourite book series of all time, and I think that Veronica Roth did an amazing job creating and writing about a captivating futuristic society filled with interesting characters.
