“Evil Dead Rise” Movie Review

By Ryan, Grade 12

“Evil Dead Rise” is a horror movie that was released in 2023 and was directed by Lee Cronin. The movie is the fifth in the “Evil Dead” film series, but this is the only one that I have watched since it is the most recently released. The other films were released in 1981, 1987, 1992, and 2013. I do not think that it is necessary to watch these films first, but you could definitely check them all out if you are super passionate about horror movies. I thought that this movie was very well done – the storyline was easy to follow, and the horror experience was the perfect level of intensity. The visual effects were amazing, and I was impressed with the gory scenes throughout the film. Overall, I would rate “Evil Dead Rise” a 3.5/5 stars.

The film starts with a scene of three teenagers at a cabin by the lake, where one of them is revealed to be possessed and kills the other two. This scene initially felt a bit out of place, as the film quickly jumps to an apartment building setting, where the remainder of the film takes place. After learning that she is pregnant, a woman named Beth goes to visit her sister, Ellie, and her children, Danny, Bridget, and Kassie. When an earthquake hits the city, Danny stumbles into a hidden tomb in the parking garage and takes records and a book from it back to their apartment. In doing so, he accidentally summons a supernatural spirit that ends up possessing his mother, Ellie. Beth, the children, and even their neighbours must then fight to survive – and avoid being possessed themselves.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys horror movies and is okay with seeing gore. There are quite a few scenes with lots of violence and blood, so you should make sure that you are prepared for that before you watch. Other than that, there are not too many jump scares, but the movie does keep you in suspense right up until the end.
