Divergent” by Veronica Roth is the first book in the “Divergent” trilogy. It was published in 2011 and it was adapted into a film that was released in 2014. It is a dystopian science fiction novel that takes place in a futuristic society of Chicago. In this society, people are divided into five different factions and living according to their designated lifestyle: Abnegation the Selfless, Erudite the Intelligent, Dauntless the Fearless, Candor the Honest, and Amity the Kind. Their society values order, obedience, and control, but we soon realize that this is not always possible to maintain – seen through the main character, Tris. Overall, I would rate “Divergent” a 4/5 stars. It is completely different from any book I have ever read before, and it is extremely entertaining.

The novel is about the journey of Beatrice Prior, or “Tris” for short, who is a sixteen-year-old girl who was born into the Abnegation faction. Since she is sixteen, it is now time for her to officially choose which faction that she wants to be a part of at the “Choosing Ceremony”. Before the ceremony, she takes the test to determine which faction she is best suited for, but she learns that she is actually “Divergent” when her test results are inconclusive. She is told to keep it a secret because of how dangerous it is to not fit into any one faction. On the Choosing Ceremony Day, Tris chooses to join the Dauntless faction, and she must now figure out how to survive in this new environment.

I would 100% recommend reading the “Divergent” book. It takes place in such an original setting with a unique concept of the factions, and it is very interesting to experience this type of world through the characters. A lot of people are probably familiar with the movie, but I think that everyone should read the book too. You can understand everything in much greater detail, and it brings the society to life in an even more vivid way.
