Thor: Love and Thunder Movie Review

By Ryan, Grade 12

“Thor: Love and Thunder” is the fourth Thor movie to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was released in 2022 and was directed by Taika Waititi, who also directed the previous film, “Thor: Ragnarok”. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the God of Thunder, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Thor’s past love interest. I really liked how the storyline focussed on how Foster becomes Mighty Thor, and I especially enjoyed seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy making a cameo appearance. However, it was not one of my favourite Marvel movies. Overall, I would rate “Thor: Love and Thunder” a 3/5 stars because it was a good comedy adventure film, but it did not feel like a classic superhero movie.

The film opens with an interesting scene introducing us to Gorr the God Butcher, portrayed by Christian Bale. We see the back story of how he became the God Butcher after he kills his god, Rapu, in anger after his daughter, Love, dies. As the villain of the film, he makes it his mission to kill all gods, which is where Thor comes in – he teams up with Valkyrie, Korg, and Mighty Thor to fight against Gorr.

I think that the Mighty Thor storyline is one of the more unique ones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer, she hopes that Thor’s hammer can heal her. However, when she finds the hammer, she discovers that it has bonded itself to her due to an enchantment that Thor placed on it to protect her years ago. Jane Foster becoming Mighty Thor makes her character even more compelling, and I really enjoyed getting to see her story come to life.

If you’re a Marvel fan, I definitely recommend watching “Thor: Love and Thunder”. It is a very entertaining film with lots of action, humour, and emotion. Even though it is not as serious as some of the other films in the franchise, it is a great watch and is enjoyable from start to finish.
