M3GAN Movie Review

By Ryan, Grade 12

“M3GAN” is a science fiction thriller film that was released in 2023 and was directed by Gerard Johnstone. The film stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a developer at the toy company Funki, and Violet McGraw as Cady, Gemma’s niece. Considering that this film is meant to be in the horror genre, I was anticipating a lot of suspense, jump scares, and frightening scenes. However, the film was not as tense as I expected. There was some humour incorporated throughout the film, which kept it more entertaining and light-hearted than a traditional thriller. In my opinion, the film was a bit predictable, so overall I would rate “M3GAN” a 2.5/5 stars.

The film starts with Cady and her parents driving together before they get into a car accident. After her parents are killed, Cady goes to live with her aunt Gemma, and she is having a very hard time adjusting to the new environment. Gemma works for a toy company called Funki developing new high-tech toys. One of the projects that she is working on is a childlike robot doll that is powered by artificial intelligence. The project is called Model 3 Generative Android, or M3GAN for short. When Gemma’s boss tells her to stop working on the project, she decides to program M3GAN to be Cady’s friend instead. However, it is not long before M3GAN starts to develop a mind of her own, and Gemma has to get things back under control.

I would recommend watching “M3GAN” if you enjoy thrillers but want to watch something that is not too scary. It is certainly a captivating storyline considering the questions it raises about the use of artificial intelligence, and it does keep you at the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. Even though I felt a little bit disappointed by the end of the movie, it was still entertaining.
