The Fever Code Book Review

By Ryan, Grade 12

“The Fever Code” is a novel in “The Maze Runner” series written by James Dashner. It was published in 2016 as a prequel to the series. While it is the fifth book to be released, it is the second book to take place chronologically. The book explores the events directly leading up to the start of “The Maze Runner,” so it allows readers to see how Thomas ends up in the Maze. Overall, I found this book to be more based on the backstory of the series rather than an independent storyline, so I would rate this book a 3/5 stars.

The book starts with Thomas as a little boy, who was originally named Stephen before he was taken by WICKED. He soon meets Teresa, and they become friends with Newt, Alby, and Minho. Together, the five of them become closer and secretly explore the outside world, which is interesting to see their friendship form before their memories are wiped and they enter the Maze. Thomas and Teresa are then chosen by WICKED to help build the Maze, and they must send their friends inside while they stay back and observe through Beetle Blades. Eventually, it is time for Thomas and Teresa to enter the Maze themselves. It is very interesting to see the days leading up to Thomas entering the Maze and to see how everything unfolds before he ends up in the Box.

If you are a fan of the series, I would definitely recommend reading “The Fever Code”. However, I would not recommend reading it if you have not read the other four books in the series yet because there will be lots of spoilers! James Dashner definitely does a great job at tying the whole series together with this book, as it fills in the storyline before “The Maze Runner”.
