Legend by Marie Lu

Review by Sabrina (Grade 9)

Rating: 5/5

The book “Legend” is a futuristic dystopian novel. 15-year-old June is a prodigy, born in one of the wealthiest districts of the Republic. 15-year-old Day, however, born in the slums, is the country’s most wanted criminal. Two vastly different worlds that would never clash, until Day becomes the prime suspect of the murder of Metias, June’s brother. However, as June learns more about Day’s life and the corruption of the government, she begins to question her allegiance to the Republic. As both their paths continue to cross, they uncover the truth behind the government’s actions.

The story switches between the two intertwined perspectives of Day and June, giving readers a peek into the opposing viewpoints of the same events. “Legend” is fast-paced and full of action, keeping readers engaged at every event. It explores themes such as power, corruption, and the struggle for justice in a flawed society. It also features plenty of action and suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The characters are very well-developed and complex, each with their own motivations and desires that drive the plot forward.

“Legend” is the first book in the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu, followed by “Prodigy” and “Champion”, which continue the story. Incredibly well written, the novel leaves readers continuously wanting more. Lu presents the events that unfold in a breathtaking and action-packed manner, all while maintaining the focus of the story. Perfect for anyone looking for a fast-paced read that will keep you on your toes until the end, “Legend” does not disappoint.
