Hairspray

Lyza Grade 12

Rating 5/5

"Hairspray" is a musical comedy directed by Adam Shankman. The movie is set in Baltimore in 1962 and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager who has a passion for dancing who dreams of appearing on "The Corny Collins Show," a popular TV show. Tracy's determination and enthusiasm help her overcome the obstacles of her weight and economic status as she pursues her dreams. It is a comedy that combines energetic dance numbers, cool costumes and catchy songs. However, "Hairspray" is more than just a lighthearted musical romp; it also conveys a significant message about self-acceptance and inclusion. The movie conveys a message of self-love and body positivity while highlighting the injustice and discrimination. The movie addresses the issue of racism in several ways throughout the film. Set in early 1960s, the movie portrays a society that is deeply segregated, with black and white people living in different neighborhoods, attending different schools, and being excluded from each other's social spaces. Tracy Turnblad becomes increasingly aware of this racial divide as she pursues her dream of dancing on "The Corny Collins Show," Overall, "Hairspray" addresses racism in a nuanced and thoughtful way, highlighting the injustices and discrimination faced by black people in 1960s America while also promoting a message of hope and inclusivity. The film's themes are as relevant today as they were in the 1960s, and "Hairspray" serves as a reminder of the importance of fighting for social justice and equality.  Overall, "Hairspray" is a fun and heartwarming movie that celebrates diversity, acceptance, and the power of music and dance to bring people together. It's a great choice for anyone looking for an entertaining and uplifting movie with a positive message.
