Get a Library Card

You are eligible for a free library card if you:

  • Live in Barrie or Oro-Medonte
  • Own property in Barrie or Oro-Medonte
  • Live in Midland or Orillia and have a current library membership at Midland or Orillia Public Library
  • Attend or work at Georgian College

Current and valid identification is required for all memberships.

 

Types of Memberships

Residents of Barrie and Oro-Medonte

Simply, bring your current name and address identification to either one of our locations.  

Barrie and Oro-Medonte Property Owners

Non-residents that own property in Barrie or Oro-Medonte may also get a library card by showing a current property tax bill and name and address identification.

Georgian College Students, Faculty and Staff

Georgian College students, faculty and staff may get a membership by showing their Georgian College ID. Similarly, Barrie Public Library members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address at Georgian College Learning Commons to get a Georgian College library card.

Members of Other Libraries

We like to share! The Barrie Public Library has borrowing agreements with the Midland and Orillia Public libraries.

Bring your Midland or Orillia Public Library card to either one of our branches, along with name identification and proof of your Midland or Orillia address, and we’ll issue you a Barrie Public Library card free of charge. Similarly, Barrie Public Library members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address to get a membership at the Midland and Orillia public libraries!  

Organizations and Business in Barrie and Oro-Medonte

Businesses and non-profit organizations in Barrie and Oro-Medonte may request a corporate card that gives full access to all library services for business purposes. The chief officer of the organization must provide approval for the membership and accepts full responsibility for material borrowed and fees incurred on the card.

Buy a Membership

If you aren't eligible for a free library card, you may get a card for the following fees:

  • $75.00 for a one year membership with an additional fee of $10.00 for each additional card for family members
  • $25.00 for a one year student membership  for students who do not live or own property in Barrie but attend school in Barrie

Visitors

Visitors may sign up for a temporary library card while staying in Barrie or Oro-Medonte.  These library cards are provided for a period of 3 weeks, with a $20 deposit that is refundable upon return of all borrowed material. To register for a Visitor card, please bring name and address identification, as well as the address of the lodging or cottage.

Identification Requirements

A driver's license or Ontario photo card will be accepted as name and address identification

Additional ID may be required for some membership types

If you don't have a driver's license or Ontario photo card, you need two pieces of identification - one for their name and one for their address.

Handwritten and expired documents are not acceptable.

Renewing or Replacing a Card

So that we have your current information on your library account, we ask all members to renew their cards regularly. When your renewal is due, bring proof address with you on your next visit to either one of our locations.

If your library card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can get a replacement card for a $2.00 fee. Remember that you are responsible for any material borrowed with your library card. If your card is lost or stolen, please report it to library staff as soon as possible.
