Get a Library Card

All residents of Barrie and Oro-Medonte can register for a free library card. Visit either branch with valid and current name and address identification.

Check our identification requirements before going to any branch to register. You can also download a copy of our Membership Registration Form to fill out before you come in. 

Non-residents that own property in Barrie or Oro-Medonte may also get a library card by showing a current property tax bill and identification.

Types of Memberships

Businesses and Non-Profits

Corporations, businesses and non-profits in Barrie and Oro-Medonte may request a corporate card that gives full access to all library services for business purposes. The chief officer of the company must bring in a letter on company letterhead requesting a card. This person must accept full responsibility for everything borrowed on the card.

Members of Other Libraries

The Barrie Public Library has borrowing agreements with the Midland and Orillia Public libraries, as well as with Georgian College. 

Bring your Midland or Orillia Public Library card to either one of our branches, along with proof of your Midland or Orillia address, and we’ll issue you a Barrie Public Library card free of charge. Similarly, BPL members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address to get a membership at the Midland and Orillia public libraries. 

Students

Georgian College students and faculty may get a library card by showing their Georgian Library card and student ID. Similarly, BPL members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address at the Georgian College Learning Commons to get a Georgian College library card.

Visitors

Visitors may sign up for a temporary library card while staying in Barrie or Oro-Medonte.  These library cards are provided for a period of 3 weeks, with a $20 deposit that is refundable upon return of all borrowed material. To register for a Visitor card, please bring identification with name, address and birthdate, as well as the address of the lodging or cottage.

Buy a Membership

If you aren't eligible for a free library card, you may get a card for the following fees:

  • $75.00 for a one year membership
  • $25.00 for a one year student membership (students who do not live or own property in Barrie but attend school in Barrie).
  • $10.00 each for cards for additional family members

Renew a Card

Library cards expire after two years for Barrie residents and one year for Oro-Medonte residents. They must be renewed in person by bringing your photo ID and proof of address to either one of our locations.

Replace a Card

You are responsible for any material borrowed with your library card. If your card is lost or stolen, please report it to library staff as soon as possible.  There is replacement fee of $2.00 for a lost or damaged library card.
