Get a Library Card

Effective June 1, 2019, we have expanded our free memberships! You are eligible for a free library membership if you:

  • Live in Barrie or Oro-Medonte
  • Work in Barrie
  • Study in Barrie
  • Own property or a business in Barrie
  • Attend or work at Georgian College
  • Live in Midland or Orillia and have a current library membership at Midland or Orillia Public Library

For all memberships, we require current name and address identification. Additional identification may be required for some membership types. 

Staff will be happy to provide you with a quick overview of the resources and services available to you with your new card! Visit either location to get started!

 

Types of Memberships

Live in Barrie and Oro-Medonte

Simply, bring your current name and address identification to either one of our locations.  

Work in Barrie

If you work in Barrie, show your current name and address identification and proof of employment in Barrie.

Study In Barrie

If you attend an educational institute in Barrie, show your name and address identification and proof of current enrolment at an educational institution to get your card!

Own Property or a Business in Barrie

Non-residents that own property or a business in Barrie may get a library card by showing a current property tax bill or business license in addition to name and address identification.

Attend or work at Georgian College

Georgian College students, faculty and staff may get a membership by showing their Georgian College ID.

Similarly, Barrie Public Library members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address at Georgian College Learning Commons to get a Georgian College library card.

Belong to another Library

We like to share! The Barrie Public Library has borrowing agreements with the Midland and Orillia Public libraries.

Bring your Midland or Orillia Public Library card to either one of our branches, along with name identification and proof of your Midland or Orillia address, and we’ll issue you a Barrie Public Library card free of charge. Similarly, Barrie Public Library members can show their library card and proof of Barrie address to get a membership at the Midland and Orillia public libraries!  

Visitors and Temporary Residents

If you are visiting Barrie or do not have a permanent address in Barrie, show appropriate identification to receive and Access card with limited borrowing privileges

Buy a Membership

If you aren't eligible for a free library card, you may purchase a one year membership for a fee of $75. This fee entitles family members at the same address to additional cards upon request.

Identification Requirements

For all memberships we require current and valid Driver's license OR Ontario photo card OR Two pieces of ID (one should have current address)

Additional identification, such as current proof of property/business ownership, employment or school enrolment may also be applicable. 

Handwritten and expired documents are not acceptable.

Examples of identification accepted are listed below.

Renewing or Replacing a Card

So that we have your current information on your library account, we ask all members to renew their cards regularly. When your renewal is due, bring current and valid identification with you on your next visit to either one of our locations.

If your library card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can get a replacement card for a $2.00 fee. Remember that you are responsible for any material borrowed with your library card. If your card is lost or stolen, please report it to library staff as soon as possible.
