How do I get a library card?

Sign up for a library at no charge if you: 

  • Live in Barrie or Oro-Medonte
  • Own a property or a business in Barrie
  • Study at Georgian College
  • Belong to Midland or Orillia Public Library and live in Midland or Orillia
  • Attend a school in Barrie *NEW*
  • Work in Barrie *New*

We also have temporary cards for visitors and tourists. To register, bring in a piece of photo ID and something that shows your proof of address. Learn more about how to register for a library card.

Do I have to return my item to the branch I borrowed it from?

No – items can be returned to whichever Barrie Public Library branch is more convenient for you.

How long can I borrow an item for?

The loan period depends on the item you’re borrowing. See our Loan Periods and Fines page for full details.

How many items can I check out on my card?

You can borrow up to 35 items at a time, including 15 DVDs and 3 games.

How can I see my fines?

Log in to your MyBPL account to see your fines, items you have checked out, due dates and more.

How can I pay my fines?

Fines can be paid online through SmartPay, at our service desks by cash, debit, credit, or at our self-checkout machines by credit or debit. The self-check machines are located in our children’s area and near the main service desk. Learn more about SmartPay Online Fine Payment

I can't find the item I'm looking for? What do I do?

If the item was published within the last 12 months, fill out our Suggest a Title form to suggest we purchase a title. If the item is older than 12 months, you can try our Inter-library Loan service - we may be able to borrow it from another library.

I can't remember my PIN. How do I reset it?

On the Library Account Login page click Forget Your PIN? and it will email you a link to set a new PIN. You can also reset it in person at either branch. Show your photo ID to staff at the desk and they’ll be able to reset it for you. Due to privacy reasons, we can’t do this over the phone or by email. 

I think my card is expired. Can I renew it?

Yes! Bring in your photo ID and proof of address to either branch and we’ll be happy to renew it for you.

I lost my library card. Can I get a new one?

Yes – there’s a $2 charge for a new card. Bring in your photo ID and proof of address to either branch and we’ll be happy to get you a new one.

How do I register for a program?

Our online calendar allows you to browse and search all our events, filter by age category or program type, and add a program to your calendar. Registration is done through the calendar, and you can use your library card number and PIN to auto-populate registration fields.
