How do I get a library card?

You are eligible for a no charge library membership if you:

  • LIVE in Barrie or Oro-Medonte
  • WORK or STUDY in Barrie
  • OWN property or a business in Barrie
  • BELONG to Midland or Orillia Public Library and LIVE in Midland or Orillia 

 You can get a library membership during Express Service hours at the Downtown or Painswick Library. 

NEW! Apply online for a library card.

Use your library card to access our Digital Library and place holds to pickup during Express Service hours. Borrow e-books and e-audiobooks, stream movies, TV shows and music, access online learning courses and brush up on your language skills (among many other things!). When you pick up your holds at either location, we will update your digital card to a card with full borrowing privileges!

 

Do I have to return my item to the branch I borrowed it from?

Return slots reopened at both locations on June 29. You can return items to the library location that is most convenient for you - either Painswick or Downtown.

How long can I borrow an item for?

Loan periods vary by the type of item you are borrowing.

How many items can I check out on my card?

You can borrow up to 80 items at a time, including 30 DVDs and 5 video games.

How can I see my fees on my account?

Log in to your MyBPL account to see your account details including:

  • Due dates for items you have checked out
  • Status of holds
  • Fees

I can't find the what I'm looking for?

If you can't find the information you are looking for, email us or call 705-728-1010, option #3. We can also help you at either location during Express Service hours!

If you can't find a book, DVD or other item in the catalogue:

  • email us or call 705-728-1010, option #3
  • If the item was published within the last 12 months, Suggest a Title to purchase.
  • If the item is older than 12 months, we may be able to borrow it from another library using Inter-library Loan

How do I reset my PIN?

Click Forget your PIN? on the Library Account Login page to receive an email with a link to set a new PIN.

You can also email us and request a PIN reset. Please include information to allow us to verify your account, such as your name and library card number. 

We can reset your PIN in person at either location during Express Service hours. Current name and address identification may be required.

 

How do I renew by library card?

To ensure your account information is up-to-date, library cards have an expiry date.

You can email us to request your library card renewal. Please include information to allow us to verify your account, such as your name and library card number. 

If you are experiencing problems accessing eResources, login to check the the status of your account. If you have fees, you can pay them online.

We can also renew your library card in person at any location during Express Service hours. Current name and address identification may be required.

I can't find my library card. How do I get a new one?

If you think you have a library membership, but can't find the number email us to request your library card number. Please include information to allow us to verify your account, such as your name and address.

We can also give you a replacement card at either location during Express Service hours. Be sure to bring name and address ID with you!

How do I register for a program?

During the closure, all our programs are virtual!

Visit our online calendar to view events by age or program type. You can add events to your own digital calendar and register for programs too!
