National Philanthropy Day, observed every year on November 15th, is a meaningful reminder of the many individuals, businesses and organizations whose gift of time, talent and passion, fuels positive change here at the Barrie Public Library.

Meet Bruce MacGillivray, a long-time patron, volunteer, small-business owner, library advocate and supporter. Bruce’s love for libraries began early on during his time at Barrie Central High School. Before and after class, he could often be found in the library, studying, spending time with friends, and lending a hand to others. It was in that warm, welcoming space that Bruce learned to play chess and discovered the true sense of community a library can offer.

Today, Bruce is a dedicated volunteer at library’s annual Barrie Dragon Boat Festival, supporting the event with general logistics, correspondence with teams, day of announcing and the awards ceremony.

“Libraries are such an important part of our communities. They’re a welcoming place where people can connect, learn, and share ideas. They support individuals, families, and even local businesses. For entrepreneurs just starting out, libraries offer a ton of valuable resources when budgets are tight, and guidance is needed most.” says MacGillivray.

Having supported the library in the past, Bruce was excited to get involved again, offering a recent donation on behalf of his business, Instant Imprints, to help the library expand its reach into the proposed Northwest and South Barrie locations.

“I think giving back matters because communities grow stronger when we support each other. Helping others also helps us grow personally. It's like that idea of "Givers Gain" from BNI, the more you put out there, the better the whole system works. It’s a win-win!” mentions MacGillivray. “To me, philanthropy is simply about helping make life better for people around me, now and in the future. It doesn’t always have to mean writing a cheque; it can be as simple as giving your time or offering support when someone needs it.  Doing something kind for someone or volunteering not only helps that person, but it also leaves me with a positive warm feeling.” adds MacGillivray.

It’s thanks to individuals like Bruce that our library system continues to thrive in helping BPL grow, expand access across the city, and provide meaningful resources for every stage of life. Whether you support the library by borrowing materials, volunteering, or donating, we extend our heartfelt thanks. On behalf of the thousands of community members who rely on our services every day, know that every contribution, big or small, helps us reach more people and strengthen our citywide impact.
