We’re excited to announce a new addition to our collection this January: Decodable Read Alongs! These books combine narration with phonics to offer an engaging way for kids to learn to read.

Decodable Read Alongs are print books that come with an audiobook ready to play. The magic happens through using phonemic awareness. These books are written with phonics or decoding, which uses knowledge of letter sounds and English spelling patterns to ‘sound out’ a word. By understanding letter-sound connections and decoding words, children develop vital reading skills in a methodical, step-by-step way.

There are two modes kids can explore:

  • Phonics Mode: Kids can listen as the key phonemes and graphemes are sounded out alongside their instructor, helping them develop foundational literacy skills at their own pace.
  • Read-Along Mode: A traditional narration experience that guides kids through proper pacing, pronunciation, and fluency, making reading more enjoyable and less stressful.

Benefits of Decodable Read Alongs:

  • Build strong foundational literacy skills
  • Enhance vocabulary and comprehension
  • Boost confidence and reduce reading anxiety
  • Encourage independent reading and problem-solving skills

This collection was made available through the generous donation by TD Bank Group to expand the Barrie Public Library’s Library of Things collection.

You can borrow these titles at the Downtown Library or place a hold to pick them up at our Painswick or Holly locations. Visit our catalogue to browse the full collection of Decodable Read Alongs, with titles ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 reading levels.

Whether you’re looking to build reading skills or inspire a love of books, these titles are a fantastic way to help kids succeed!
