Pollinator Week is an annual celebration to raise awareness for pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. Pollinators are anything that transport pollen grains from one flower to another, including bees, birds, butterflies, and more (Pollinator.org).

Pollinator Week 2024 will take place from June 17-23. The theme for this year is “Vision 2040: Thriving ecosystems, economies, and agriculture,” envisioning a future where pollinators not only survive but thrive.

Here’s How You Can Celebrate Pollinator Week:

1. Meet Your Neighbours with Pollinate Barrie
Downtown – Wednesday, June 19 from 6:30-8pm
All ages to welcome to join the team from Pollinate Barrie to learn what native bees look like, where they live, and what they do. Then visit the library's native gardens and see who we can spot! Learn more.

2. Borrow Books About Pollinators
Our staff have created a list of books with information about pollinators and how to care for your garden to attract them.

3. Visit our Native Gardens at the Downtown Library
Last spring, we worked with the City of Barrie to plant our Downtown Library gardens full of pollinator-friendly plants that are native to Ontario. These gardens are low maintenance, conserve water and provide much-needed food sources for pollinators, insects, birds and animals. Visit the gardens in person or take a virtual tour.

4. Plant for Pollinators using a Gardening Kit
It is important to plant with pollinators in mind. Borrow a Gardening Kit from our Library of Things collection and get started on transforming your garden into a pollinator-friendly place.

5. Participate in the City of Barrie’s Pic-a-Pollinator Contest
Submit your pollinator photo by June 23, 2024, for a chance to win a bee hotel. The winning photo will be featured on the City’s website and social media. Submit your pollinator photo.

6. Attend the City of Barrie's Pollinator Week Events
Did you know that Barrie is a Bee City? The City of Barrie is committed to protecting and creating pollinator habitats, providing community education, and celebrating our pollinators. Learn more about activities and events going on in the City of Barrie to celebrate Pollinator Week.
