As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, it's time to start thinking about how to make the most of your summer. You are invited for a summer filled with fun, learning, and adventure at the Barrie Public Library.

Here are our 12 fun things to do at the library this summer:

1. Sign up for the Summer Reading Club

Discover the adventure of reading, join some amazing programs, and have a blast while doing it! The Summer Reading Club is a summer reading program for kids ages 3-12 and teens in grades 7-12, with a reading challenge and special programs running from July 2 until the end of August. For more information and how to register, visit the Summer Reading Club webpage.

2. Get sporty with our Library of Things collection

Our Library of Things collection offers a variety of items that you can borrow for outdoor summer fun. You can borrow Bocce Ball Kits, Disc Golf Sets, Tackleshare Fishing Kits, Pickleball Kits, Ping Pong Kits, Spikeball Kits, and more for free with your library card!

3. Relax on our Rooftop Reading Garden

Our Downtown Library is home to a hidden oasis, the Rooftop Reading Garden. It's Barrie's best kept secret! Bring your book or laptop and enjoy the beautiful gardens, Muskoka chairs, tables, and benches. We also have a playhouse and play kitchen for kids.

4. Discover new reading recommendations

The best part of summer vacation? More time to read! Check out our curated lists of Staff Picks for inspiration. We’ve got recommendations for every age group and genre.

5. Learn a new skill or hobby

This summer, you can learn a new skill or hobby with our free online tools. Access ArtistWorks for online music lessons for all learning levels. You can also learn a new language with Transparent Language. LinkedIn Learning provides training tutorials on anything from business to web design to photography. The possibilities are endless!

6. Start volunteering in your community

Do you know a teen trying to complete their 40 volunteer hours? Or are you looking to get involved in your community? Discover volunteer opportunities on Information Barrie’s Volunteer Database. We are also looking for volunteers to fill library positions – check out our Volunteer webpage to learn more.

7. Attend fun library programs and events

The library is hosting free programs and events all summer long! From Friday Flicks to the True Crime Book Club, we have something for everyone. Visit our Events Calendar for all the details.

8. Adventure into the great outdoors

Take advantage of our free Ontario Parks and Wye Marsh passes, which are available for checkout. We also have new Discover Insects Kits and Adventure Kits to level up your exploration. Enjoy a day of hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the great outdoors in the summer sun!

9. Host an outdoor movie night

What’s more fun than a movie under the stars? Borrow a Portable Projector Kit and your favourite movie from our collection for a night at the cinema in your backyard.

10. Enjoy a new read at a local park or beach

Take your library book or e-reader outdoors and enjoy reading at one of Barrie’s beautiful parks or beaches. It is a perfect way to relax and soak up some sun!

11. Attend the annual Barrie Dragon Boat Festival presented by Tim Hortons

Held annually by the Barrie Public Library in beautiful Heritage Park, the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival brings the community together for a fun-filled day of camaraderie and fundraising while racing dragon boats on Kempenfelt Bay. Save the date for the festival on Saturday, August 16. Along with watching the thrilling races, there will be fun activities for the whole family. Visit the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival webpage for more information.

12. Participate in Simcoe Reads

Join in on Simcoe Reads, a Simcoe County-wide reading initiative based on Canada Reads. This year, eight libraries are taking part - each library chooses a community champion and a book they think the community should read. This summer, we invite you to dive into the selected titles, then join the Grand Finale debate in October where the champions debate and a winner is crowned. Learn more about Simcoe Reads.

From reading and learning to exploring and volunteering, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the summer in Barrie. We look forward to seeing you at the library this summer!
